KU International Affairs is accepting proposals and applications for travel grants that support faculty and graduate student research and collaboration abroad. The deadline for submitting proposals and applications is March 6. Grant recipients will be notified by the end of April.

15 KU Students Named 2024 Global Scholars

From around the world and across diverse academic units, 15 University of Kansas second-year students have been selected as the 2024 cohort of Global Scholars. In its 13th year, the Global Scholars Program recognizes and encourages undergraduate students who have an interest in international studies and a strong academic record. Elizabeth MacGonagle, associate professor of history and African & African-American studies, directs the program.

International Education Week Recognizes Importance of Global Connections

The University of Kansas is joining higher education institutions across the country to celebrate International Education Week, which runs through Nov. 17. A joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, the week promotes programs that prepare those in the U.S. for a global world and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.

Former ISS Director Receives NAFSA International Volunteer Award

Chuck Olcese, former director of International Support Services, was recognized with the International Volunteer of the Year Award at the NAFSA Region II Conference in Lawrence last month. Olcese, who was at KU from 2012 to 2020, was recognized for his work with migrant and refugee populations following his retirement. While presenting the award, Joe Potts, associate vice provost for international innovation, development and strategic partnership, noted Olcese’s impact has been felt from the time of his arrival at KU as ISS director.

Rafe Brown is inaugural recipient of KUIA Advisory Board International Research Award

As a leader in equitable and collaborative international research and education, Rafe Brown, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, is the inaugural recipient of the KU International Affairs Advisory Board International Research Award. The award recognizes faculty members who provide outstanding leadership in international education through their research and discovery efforts.

Two KU Doctoral Students Receive Fulbright-Hays Dissertation Award

Two doctoral candidates at the University of Kansas have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Award, receiving a combined $92,000 to conduct research in South America. Pere DeRoy, a doctoral candidate in women, gender & sexuality studies, received $51,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to travel to Guyana for 10 months to study reproductive health.
